The Power of Mentoring

We’ve all had someone in our life who’s shared their experience with us. Shared knowledge we wouldn’t otherwise have known, as we hadn’t reached that point yet. Shared their perspective or insight on our chosen path.

When I started fencing, I had a friend I looked up to who had so much experience and grace to share. She had expertise in competition and training from years competing for Poland until she moved and became Canadian. She understood things and shared her thoughts about travelling, the culture around the sport and how to handle the ups and downs. Just watching her taught me so much.

She was an amazing mentor and someone I am grateful for and appreciate for all the help she gave me. Renata may not even be aware of the tremendous impact she had on me. She questioned my view of results and my expectations of myself, and what I thought of them. She viewed results as a matter of doing the work, focusing, and giving 100%. The results take care of themselves.

Her mentorship to me was life-changing.

Mentorship is more significant than us and part of what we all do when we move along in our life and career. When given the opportunity, sharing our life experiences with others is a gift that is given and received. Mentors guide, advise, inspire, influence, and support us as we journey toward better versions of ourselves. Paying it forward is the ultimate reward.

I’ve been lucky to be invited as the mentor for the Canadian Olympics this summer. It’s the team I’ve been part of, a fan of, and am proud to take on the ultimate role of mentor. I’ve come full circle, and I’m excited to be a support in any way I can, as so many have been to me.

Thanks, Renata!
